Best Carriers for Traveling with your Child
Whether you are an adventurer or a homebody, most of us will travel with our children at some point. And if you have a child under 5, a baby carrier should be an essential part of your travel survival kit. Whether you're going to far-flung destination, to visit relatives, to a long-distance wedding or to Disneyland for the weekend, make space for a baby carrier or two. You won't regret it!
7 reasons why strollers can't do it all
A good travel stroller is certainly a worthwhile investment, but there are many times when we've chosen to leave the stroller at home. Here's why:
-
Even the sleekest strollers are big & bulky compared to a baby carrier. You can't bring them on the train with you, they may not fit into a cab and they are very difficult to use on any form of public transportation. And they certainly won't fit in your diaper bag!
-
Strollers are extremely difficult to use in crowded places. If you've ever tried to go shopping with a stroller during the holidays, you know what we mean. With a baby carrier, you can keep your child close and easily cope with the crowds.
-
Surfaces in many places are unsuitable for strollers. Beaches, dirt or gravel roads, cobblestoned paths, and stairs are all much easier to negotiate when it's just you, the baby, and your baby carrier.
-
Strollers are not allowed everywhere. Airplanes and some muse historical sites, for example, will ask you to check your stroller before entering. Baby carriers can go anywhere.
-
Many babies and kids will not tolerate being in the stroller all day. They want to cuddle and be close to you. Or they get bored in the stroller. If you're on the move in a stroller, this can set you back in your plans. Baby carrier to the rescue - you can cuddle with your child, entertain him or her, and still keep moving!
-
As your children get older, they will want to walk more and ride less. No one wants to deal with an empty stroller for hours on end. A baby carrier can easily go in your bag and get pulled out only when your little one is tired and needs a break.
How to Choose a Travel Carrier for your Child
We recommend taking at least two carriers with you on any trip you take. Bring one for cuddling and soothing as well as easy of/off, and one workhorse for longer outings.
You will also want to take into account the weather at your destination and whether you will be involved in any special activities.
Our recommendations
For travel with a toddler: Bring a pouch or ring sling (for easy on/off and cuddling/soothing) and an ERGO carrier as your workhorse.
For serious hiking: We recommend the ERGO baby carrier for serious hiking with a child 5 months and older (with good head control). For hiking with an infant, we recommend the Pikkolo carrier with a support belt for extra waist support.
For cold weather, rain & snow: The Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch baby sling is the warmest, cuddliest baby carrier we know. However, if you're going to active in the snow, we recommend a Pikkolo (for an infant) and the ERGO carrier for an older baby or toddler. You may also want to consider a weather cover for the ERGO (it's lined with fleece) or a warm carrier cover like the Catbird Baby fleece cover or the Peekaru babywearing vest.
Don't forget travel accessories!
Keep an eye on your baby: We won't leave home without our Peek-n-Back babywearing mirror or Chisco Rearview Mirror. Both give you an easy peek at your child on your back. Did he drop his pacifier again? Is she finally asleep? Do I have the sleeping hood on properly? One of these mirrors is a must-have for every traveler!
Bags and pockets: We also always bring an extra bag or pouch that hooks onto the carrier we are using. You can never have too many pockets and bags when travelling, and one that can become part of the baby carrier is especially handy when you're on the go:

If using the ERGO carrier, you'll find the ERGO front pouch handy for storing your wallet, keys and other items you want super handy. And if you're going truly minimalist, the ERGO backpack makes a good diaper bag, leaving you truly handsfree. It fits a change of clothes, a diaper, wipes, a changing pad and even a sippy cup or two.
