Dear Sling Lady,
I’m looking for a carrier that will let me carry my baby in front and facing outward. I tried the Baby Bjorn but was concerned about “crotch carriers” like it. I understand that it is better to support the baby by its butt. Do you have any you can recommend?

You are not alone in seeking alternatives to the Baby Bjorn carriers. And while some baby wearing advocates do not approve of carrying a baby facing forward, I’ve had many parents tell me that this is the only way their child wants to be carried. So I’m so happy that there are comfortable options that allow forward facing carries when necessary.
I can highly recommend either the Pikkolo carrier or the Beco Gemini. Both of these buckle carriers are similar to the Bjorn in that they use buckles and are very simple to use, even for “newbies.” Both are great alternatives to the Bjorn that more properly support baby’s bottom and hips. Both of the baby carriers are also more flexible than the Bjorn in that they can be used with older, heavier children. They can also be used on the back as well as the hip in addition to the front carry. Both also offer the forward facing carry that you seek.
