Consumer Reports responds to outrage

Enough people have responded to the Consumer Reports article “5 Products Not to Buy for your Baby” (see my blog post about it here) that they were motivated to write a followup post.  I was so interested in this, because apparently (according to this article in the New York Times), CR almost never gets this sort of response.  Dishwashers and cars just don’t generate the same emotions!

Sadly, although the response insists that CR is not disputing the benefits of babywearing, they go on to once again insist (with no evidence) that currently available slings pose a hazard to babies.  Sigh!  They seem to think that Baby Bjorn and Snuglis are better because they are easier to use , but don’t mention possible hip displasia associated with the position of babies in these carriers nor the fact that it’s just as easy to bang a baby’s head on the door jam while using a Bjorn vs. another carrier.

One of my favorite bloggers, Amalah from Advice Smackdown on Alpha Mom, wrote a post which is so much more thorough, eloquent and to the point than anything I could craft, so I urge you to read it!

What the CR report does highlight is that safety is critical when using any baby item!  So over the next couple of posts, I’ll be highlighting safety information in the use of your baby sling or baby carrier.
