Halloween with your Baby – dump the stroller in favor of a great baby carrier!

Babywearing Halloween CostumesIf you’re going out on Halloween, don’t forget to bring a great sling!  A baby carrier is an invaluable tool for navigating trick-or-treating, Halloween parties, parades and other festivities while keeping your littlest one warm and happy. Halloween babywearing lets you show off baby’s costume (if you have one), keeps you both warm, and lets your little one in on the action (while providing a comfy spot for sleeping when the time comes).  No need for a bulky stroller that has to be left at the bottom of the neighbors’ steps!

Some tips for making the evening a smooth and happy one for all:

  • Costumes are awesome, but don’t be afraid to keep it simple!  While complicated costumes can be a hit at the party, they often aren’t comfortable to wear, for you or for baby. Don’t create a costume that makes taking baby out for diaper changes and feeding too much of a hassle.  Adding a simple hat (like the Yoda hat above) or attaching the costume to the carrier itself (like this Popcorn Vendor costume) can have a whole lot of impact but still be relatively comfortable and easy to deal with throughout the evening.
  • while many adorable costume photos show babies in a carrier facing forward on your chest, keep in mind that this position can be overstimulating for babies and greatly increase the chances of a meltdown as the evening progresses.  Not to mention increasing the chances that some well-meaning person will inform you that the facing out position is not ideal for your baby’s hips and spine.  If you feel your costume really needs baby facing out, you might consider having baby face out for pictures and in the beginning of the evening, then turning him/her around for some quality snuggles later on, especially when you are ready for baby to go to sleep.
  • Back carries are most comfortable if you’re going to wearing baby for a longer time!
