Tip Tuesday: Troubleshoot Armpit Rubbing with your Buckle Carrier

Troubleshoot armpit rubbing with your buckle carrier, Tula, Ergobaby or other Is your new buckle carrier rubbing, chafing or otherwise irritating your armpit area?  Armpit rubbing is definitely an issue with getting comfy in your new carrier!  I am regularly asked about this by customers who have purchased or borrowed a buckle carrier (like the Tula, Ergobaby, Beco or pretty much any buckle carrier.)  If this is happening to you, here are two ways to try adjusting your carrier before deciding that particular buckle carrier isn’t for you.

  1. Loosen the shoulder straps.  Yes, wearing your child snugly against your body is ergonomic for your back, but wearing baby too tightly can definitely cause the webbing of your buckle carrier (or even the buckles themselves) to chafe your body.  So slightly loosening the straps is the first step to troubleshoot this issue.
  2. If #1 doesn’t work, try playing around with the positioning of your chest strap.  Where your chest strap is connected to the carrier can make a big difference in how the straps lie against your body.  Try different positions to see which one works best for you.  I usually find that moving the chest strap down lower helps a lot!

If these tips don’t solve the problem of armpit rubbing with your carrier, you may want to look at choosing a different brand.  Different buckle carriers fit quite differently, and the carrier that works for your sister, best friend or neighbor, might not be the one that works best for you!
